Here’s Why You Must Never Ask For Directions In Bali

What happens when you ask somebody for directions and they turn out to be wrong? Your blood boils with rage, right? A common scene in Bali, try avoiding a bad temper by not asking for directions from the Balinese while exploring your Bali Honeymoon Package.

Why?

This is because the Balinese have an altogether different concept of North and South. Directions like Right, Left, North, and South do not actually exist in Bali. They have Agung Mount as their geographic reference point which separates the island into two parts.

Why Agung Mount?

Agung Mount or Gunung Agung is a sacred mountain and because it’s the central part of the island of Bali, it is taken as the point from where directions are measured.

How?

For the Balinese, North is always towards Mount Agung. For example – If a person is at a place which is to the north of Agung, for the Balinese Mount Agung will still be in the north and not in the south of that place.

Direction System

The Balinese direction system is based on the ancient animist culture. They are of the belief that the Gods and Goddesses live in the mountains, demons in the oceans, and humans in between. Towards the mountains is ‘Kaja’ and towards the ocean is ‘kelod’.

If you ask for directions from the Balinese, be assured that you will never find it. It is better you carry a guide book or book guided tours in your Bali Holiday Package.
