For the Balinese, North is always towards Mount Agung. For example – If a person is at a place which is to the north of Agung, for the Balinese Mount Agung will still be in the north and not in the south of that place.

The Balinese direction system is based on the ancient animist culture. They are of the belief that the Gods and Goddesses live in the mountains, demons in the oceans, and humans in between. Towards the mountains is ‘Kaja’ and towards the ocean is ‘kelod’.
